Tizanidine - Zanaflex |
Tizanidine belongs to a group of medications called muscle
relaxants. Tizanidine is used to treat spasticity, a condition where
muscles in your body spasm, cramp, or become tight due to medical
problems such as multiple sclerosis or spine injury. Muscle
relaxants work by blocking excess firing of the nerve cells that
control muscle movement. Tizanidine is a muscle relaxant drug that
works by blocking the alpha-2-adrenoceptor in the brain and spinal
cord central nervous system.
The effect of this is to "damp down" the signals sent to the
muscles. Tizanidine works through the brain to relieve pain. It
decreases the body's release of adrenaline and other hormones that
increase blood pressure, heart rate, and anxiety.
Tizanidine has been shown in some studies to be effect for the
treatment of fibromyalgia. At the present time fibromyalgia remains
a clinical diagnosis based on your symptoms and the doctor’s
findings on examination.
Some diagnostic tests may be indicated depending on your
circumstances to rule out other conditions. In order to confirm the
diagnosis of spasticity, the following tests can be performed to
evaluate the child's arm and leg movements, muscular activity, range
of motion, and ability to perform self-care activities.
Tizanidine-Zanaflex reduces spasticity by acting on the central
nervous system.
